SAP Embedded Analytics
SAP Embedded Analytics is one of the new innovations of SAP S/4HANA. It is a collection of SAP Fiori tiles that enable real time operational reporting. Embedded Analytics uses SAP Fiori as the front-end user interface and is delivered with standard content known as Fiori analytical apps for countless functional areas.
Leveraging the power of the in-memory, virtual data model
With the evolution of SAP HANA, the SAP core technology has undergone a paradigm shift in the way business applications are developed.
The simplification of the data storage logic introduced an optimized way of retrieving the data from the underlying SAP tables, which now hold the ‘single source of truth for all business functions. The absence of aggregate tables eliminates the need for extensive lookups, while delivering answers to queries at light speed.
From a technical perspective, SAP devised a new way of accessing these optimized tables—Core Data Services (CDS) views. CDS simplifies and harmonizes the way you define and consume your data models. Technically, it is an enhancement of SQL which provides the data definition language for defining semantically rich database tables and views (CDS entities) and user-defined types in the database. Overall, the concept of the Virtual Data Model was introduced with SAP HANA Live as a virtual data model that sits on top of the suite of tables which uses native SAP HANA SQL views called calculation views for real-time operational reporting.
The virtual data model is a structured representation of CDS views in SAP S/4HANA. The VDM forms the basis for data access in SAP S/4HANA in, for example, analytical consumption or APIs. The CDS views that make up the VDM follow consistent modeling and naming rules. They expose business data – stored in abstract database tables – in a way that is based on business semantics and therefore easier to consume. To access exactly the data required for the apps created, released CDS views are reused from those available in the VDM. For example, you can define views that aggregate and analyze data in a layered fashion, starting with existing views delivered by SAP and then adding your own views to match your specific use case.
